Birds of Prey Presentation

Join us this Saturday, September 17th for Lisa Miller's Birds of Prey Presentation.

Lisa Miller is E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center’s very own Birds of Prey Rehabilitator. She will be showing and discussing several birds that are under her care. Not only will she be bringing “Medusa,” she will bring with her a Barred Owl named “Oz,” a Mississippi Kite named “Casper” and an American Crow named “Wizard.” Shortly after 1:30 she will be releasing back into the wild a Merlin, which she has been rehabilitating. You don’t want to miss this event. Watching a bird fly back into the forest after rehabilitation is hard to put into words. You just have to experience it for yourself. Lisa is very passionate about her birds and also extremely knowledgeable. Come to the E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center for a great experience that you will remember for a long time.

Flyer attached. Standard admission rates apply. Visit us at www.eowilsoncenter.org for more information.

Get Involved with the 26th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day!

Okaloosa County TDC encourages locals to get involved!

Destin, FL | August 29, 2011: The Okaloosa County TDC encourages local citizens to participate in Ocean Conservancy’s 26th Annual Coastal Clean-Up Day, the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean health, on Saturday, September 17th from 8-10 a.m.

Since the spring of 1988, the Okaloosa County TDC sponsored Environmental Council has organized 29,620 volunteers to remove 113,901 pounds of marine debris during biannual beach cleanups. Anyone of any age including family, friends, coworkers, neighbors and schools can participate! People around the world will be walking the coastlines, hopping aboard boats, scuba diving and more to collect any type of debris such as plastic rings, fishing nets and line, cigarette butts, glass and aluminum bottles, etc. existing both above and below the surface that can harm marine life and ecosystems.

Be sure to take pictures of littered areas before Sept. 17th as the Environmental Council is hosting a “Lens on Litter” contest! The winning photos will be displayed at the Visitors Welcome Center and $100 Destin Commons Gift Card. Here are the rules:

Each digital printed or hard copy photo MUST be accompanied with the following information on a 3x5 card attachment listing the (1) contest category (adult or student), (2) photographer name, (3) age, (4) grade (if student), (5) address, (6) phone number, (7) title of composition, (8) location and date photo was taken. Photos must be no smaller than 4x6 inches and no larger than 8x10 inches and in color. There is no limit to the number of photos that can be submitted. Each photo will be judged on six criteria that help show how litter costs us money, health, beauty, safety, and wildlife.
-Anti-litter message
-Quality of photo
-Originality of photo
-Originality of title
-Photographic technique
-Severity of the Litterbug’s crime

Send all entries postmarked by SEPTEMBER 17, 2011 to the Okaloosa Environmental Council, 1540 Miracle Strip Pkwy SE, Ft. Walton Beach FL 32548.
