Okaloosa County Recycling Division Hosts Recycling Demo

Plus July 4th Holiday Schedule Changes

Okaloosa County Recycling hosted several Florida counties for debris separator equipment demonstrations on Wednesday, June 24. Three companies provided demonstrations on how to extract plastic and fines (fines is a material used for top soil like in flower beds or lawns), from processed yard waste, creating compost material for reuse and oversized materials for reuse in an erosion control technology. GeoHay of Crestview provided samples of Erosion Control Logs they produce. Erosion control logs can be reused for storm water, transportation and more.

Okaloosa County Recycling, a division of the Public Works Department, received an Innovative Recycling Grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in order to organize the demonstration. Funding will also allow for leasing the plastic separation equipment during the grant period. It is the goal of Okaloosa County to recycle 75 percent of material they collect by year 2020.

Companies demonstrating their equipment included Airlift Separator and Construction Equipment Company, as well as a German-engineered Doppstadt and Dutch-made REDOX. Evaluations of all the equipment will be available on the Okaloosa County web site, no later than Friday, July 3.

For more information, contact Jim Reece at the Okaloosa County Recycling Office (850) 689-5772 in Crestview or 651-7394 in Fort Walton Beach. Waste Management will operate as usual on the 4th of July. Wright Composting Facility will be open from 7:00 until 12:00 (usually open until 3:30PM). Baker and Fort Walton Beach Transfer Stations will be open normal hours 6:00 until 12:00.

Chamber’s Green Awareness Taskforce Recycles at 54th Bowlegs Festival

The Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Green Awareness Taskforce rallied together talent, business leaders and community to launch Single Stream Recycling at the 54th Billy Bowlegs Festival. This included recycling for boaters.

Volunteers from McDonalds Franchise Owner Mike Wright (Emerald Coast McDonalds) & David Costa (Costa Enterprises), Green Awareness Taskforce members, ROTC and local residents collected and sorted over 320 bags of trash.  80 bags of aluminum cans that weighed 643 pounds were delivered to a local metal recycling company by Emerald Coast McDonalds. Money received from aluminum cans was donated to the Ronald McDonald House of NW Florida. Over 900 pounds of plastics 1 thru 7, cardboard boxes, paper & glass bottles were recycled thanks to the Bowlegs Festival committee who provided the Taskforce with a recycling site and Steve Cookman from Waste Management who provided a Single Stream Recycling Container.

Jim Reece from Okaloosa County Recycling Department provided all the collection containers that were at the Festival site and used on a pontoon barge.

Green Awareness Taskforce member Chris Eilertsen and Mike Wright created a floating recycling pontoon barge used to collect aluminum cans, bottles & full bags from boaters. Pontoon barge was donated by Boogies Water Sports of Destin. Char Gibicsar, Lori Gorham & Tammi Brant pulled rafts through the water for boaters to deposit aluminum cans, bottles and collect full bags. 3 rafts were donated by Alvin’s Island and 30 latex balloons were donated by Party City.  Lyn & Tony Kelley provided the Jet Ski transportation for raft and pontoon volunteers.

First thru third prizes were given away to the boats who contributed the most bags of bottles and cans.  Prizes were donated by McDonalds Franchise Owners David Costa & Mike Wright, Helen Back, FWB Chamber, 99Rock, Waste Management, Okaloosa County Recycling & Water departments.

Appreciation goes out to all citizens, boaters, businesses and community leaders who contributed their time, donations, ideas and who recycled at the Festival. Special thanks to Nick Chubb, James Reese, Darc Roberson and Milton, Jason and Mindy Floyd, Libbie Hambleton and Ed Pheifer for passing out fliers and bags to boaters at local boat ramps.
